Securing Your Home

Let’s get a bit more specific about what you can do to secure your home against intruders.

Alarm Systems

A home alarm system is probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think about securing your home. A professionally-installed alarm system can give homeowners more peace-of-mind and may be enough to deter many criminals and send them searching for an easier target.

There are, of course, numerous options to choose from when you decide to have a security system installed. For the greatest protection a professionally-installed system that includes alarms on all doors and windows (including glass breakage) and motion detectors is probably the way to go.

Most whole-house systems will also provide the option to have the alarm system contact the alarm company or local law enforcement authorities automatically when the alarm is set off.

A lot of homeowners think of alarm systems as an excellent way to keep their homes from being broken into when they are away and as someone who has an alarm in his home, that certainly makes me a lot more comfortable when the house is left empty for a long period of time.

What gives me just as much – or maybe even more – comfort is knowing that I can set my alarm at bedtime and have a high level of confidence that any intruder trying to enter my home in the middle of the night will set off the alarm. One of the last things I want to see in the middle of the night is a stranger standing at my bedside.

I suspect that many intruders will choose to flee when they hear the sound of an alarm because it’s quite likely that police have been notified and are on the way. Any criminal with half a brain would rather take off and be free to try again somewhere else rather than be chased through the neighborhood by the cops.

Many alarm systems will also include fire and smoke detectors and I don’t suppose I have to explain the benefits of those features.

Security Cameras

There are a dizzying array of security cameras on the market today. If you want to delve deeply enough into the possibilities, you’ll be amazed at the clever and almost-impossible-to-detect hidden security cameras available today.

I see security cameras as more of a compliment to a good alarm system rather than something that can be relied upon to protect you at all times. I don’t suppose many people have the time or inclination to sit around watching security cameras around the clock.

With a decent security camera installed, or multiple cameras if you can afford it, you have the potential of capturing valuable evidence for law enforcement authorities in the event that something happens on your property.

Security cameras are excellent for protection of your property, including your car(s) that may be parked outside and are more vulnerable to thieves and vandals.

Even in a worst-case scenario when someone is brazen enough to break into your home and ignore a blaring alarm, a well-hidden security camera may capture evidence that could be used to track down the criminals who broke into your home and stole your property while you were away.

Computers and the internet play an increasingly important role in home security these days. It’s fairly inexpensive to purchase a decent webcam and monitoring software that will allow you to connect from remote locations and access your webcam to make sure everything is in order at home.

There are, of course, very elaborate and expensive systems that allow you to have multiple cameras in your home and on your property that you can access remotely. Some of these systems will allow you to control the cameras so you can zoom in or out and view various other areas within range of the camera so that you can keep watch on your entire home and yard.

Security And Your Budget

Like just about everything else in life, the amount of security you choose for your home depends on how much money you want to spend. Whether you opt for a Kia solution or a Mercedes solution, keep in mind that some measure of security is better than none.

A do-it-yourself kind of person can probably install a very capable and thorough security system for much less than a professionally-installed system would cost. There are numerous DIY security products on the market that can be combined to customize a system that will probably rival many professionally-installed systems.
